Essential Principles and Fundamental Concepts

Each Essential Principle is supported by Fundamental Concepts comparable to those underlying the National Science Education Standards (NSES) Science Content Standards. Consult this matrix to see how to integrate ocean literacy into your curriculum.

Clicking on an Essential Principle statement below will open a webpage with the statement of the Essential Principle and the associated Fundamental Concepts for that principle.

Essential Principle 1: The Earth has one big ocean with many features.

Essential Principle 2: The ocean and life in the ocean shape the features of Earth.

Essential Principle 3: The ocean is a major influence on weather and climate.

Essential Principle 4: The ocean makes the Earth habitable.

Essential Principle 5: The ocean supports a great diversity of life and ecosystems.

Essential Principle 6: The ocean and humans are inextricably interconnected.

Essential Principle 7: The ocean is largely unexplored.

What do you think about these principles?

Is one more important to understand than another?
